Fix for font problems on GTK+ 1.2 client reported in (PR#1606).

I tested the client with the following locales:
  - ja_JP.eucJP
  - hu_HU.ISO-8859-2
  - ru_RU.KOI8-R

It also fixes font problems reported by SuSE users using the de_DE@euro
locale.
